Skiin’

March 7th, 2010 · No Comments

First runs on another achingly, bright blue Vermont morning.  The rest of the Northeast Kingdom may have lost 95% of its snow cover, but Burke Mountain remains 100% open.

The view at the transition from Upper to Lower Willoughby, named after the Willoughby Gap, that giant glacial gouge you see way off in the distance. The [...]

Sugarin’

March 6th, 2010 · No Comments

Helluva ‘winter’ here in the Northeast Kingdom.  Ever since the January thaw, it hasn’t snowed much at all, hasn’t gotten cold, hasn’t done the things it’s supposed to do so the plow guys can make a few bucks and the snowmobilers can come up from down country and spend their dollars here.
Fortunately, lots of the [...]

Intense

March 2nd, 2010 · 2 Comments

The most intense interview of my life. That is how I would describe the thirteen or so minutes I spent on the phone with Ed Asner last week.
Ed Asner appears Wednesday night at 7:00 PM at Fuller Hall at St. Johnsbury Academy.  His one-man show, F.D.R., is being sponsored by Catamount Arts. You are well [...]

It begins

February 17th, 2010 · No Comments

November may seem distant, but the campaigning has begun.  Lt. Governor Brian Dubie, who threw his hat in the ring after Governor Jim Douglas announced he would not be running, has been on a “Jobs Tour” of the state since mid-January.
Wednesday morning, prior to visiting companies throughout the Northeast Kingdom, he stopped by the studios.  [...]

How to do a Snow Dance in the new millenium

February 5th, 2010 · No Comments

You let a bear get the word out to travelers

You go on the radio and tell the world

You warm up to music by The Village People

You dance, baby!
We are confident in predicting a 12-14″ snowfall on either February 9th or 10th.  Should the weather gods fail to comply, we will consider this a re-initiation of [...]

We ski together on Christmas Day

December 25th, 2009 · No Comments

It was cloudy and chilly today here in the Northeast Kingdom.  But on Christmas Day, the sun was shining and temperatures were in the mid 20’sF on top of Burke Mountain as we skied above the clouds.

Upper & Lower Willoughby were in great, groomed shape, there was plenty of powder on Powderhorn and Christmas Day [...]

We gather together on Christmas Eve

December 24th, 2009 · No Comments

For we don’t know how long, we have flung open the doors on Christmas Eve at the Magic 97.7 studios and invited everyone to come visit, share food and drink, share memories and send wishes.
This year we recorded the whole damn thing.   Hour One begins with Todd Wellington stumbling into the studio after the 6:00 [...]

Editorial Comment from the Caledonian Record, Saturday December 12th

December 12th, 2009 · No Comments

With our full support and 100% endorsement:
Backbone Anyone?
It has become too predictable. School boards and school administrators
hide the sometimes scandalous behavior of some of their personnel,
administrators and teachers behind the bogeyman of confidentiality
and/or the cowards’ way out of payoffs to avoid public lawsuits.
So we have one, for sure, and possibly two principals railroaded out
in Caledonia [...]

Yeah, but…

November 24th, 2009 · No Comments

Darcy Carter is the District Director for the Small Business Administration in Vermont.  In late February, she called in to tell us about some new financial and business development programs the SBA was implementing.
On Tuesday morning, Darcy called in again, to give us some numbers, and to give us what on the surface seems like [...]
