Rusty DeWees is a mass of contradictions. His main character (he has plenty) is The Logger and in addition to a bunch of TV shows and movie appearances, writing a book, doing a weekly radio gig in Burlington and talking to high school kids about lifestyle choices, he spends a lot of time traveling Vermont putting on what he calls vuh-RYE-uh-tee shows. Think Prairie Home Companion for woodchucks. He brought his latest show to the Alexander Twilight Theatre at Lyndon State College Friday night, a benefit for Lyndon Area Youth Hockey.
With regulars Dom Como, a master fiddler, and guitarist Peter Wilder, Rusty delivered nearly two and a half hours of non-stop entertainment. The first half was the basic Logger show, lots of standup, interaction with the audience and flatlander jokes. After a ten-minute break, he was joined by Keegan Nolan, a 17-year old from Fairfield, Vermont who I used to bring in to sing on Friday nights on the radio in St. Albans, and a wonderful dancer whose name has escaped me, and that is upsetting. If you know her name, please drop a comment here. She was wonderful, and she brought an element to a Logger Show that I would never have expected.
Fortunately, there’s another show TONIGHT at 8:00 PM at the theatre. Grab twenty-two bucks, go to the theatre and make sure you bring some duct tape, because it they ain’t taped down, he’s gonna knock your socks off.
